being a cartoon world, this means that thinner causes something to cease to exist, whilst splattering something in paint makes it solid and useable. The central gameplay mechanic is the magic paintbrush which you can use to apply both paint and paint thinner. that role falls to the Mad Doctor who is after Mickey's heart. Mickey gets drawn into this 'wasteland' and must find a way to return home. The character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit actually pre-dates Mickey, so here in the game Oswald is this resentful guy who has become the ruler of an alternate world where all the Disney rejects go.
these characters go back to the 1920s and 30s. There HAVE been games before that have mined Disney's animation past, but nothing quite as elaborate as this. There's actually a level of detail here that would charm even film historians - as the game lets you explore a world called 'the Wasteland' which is brimming with elements and characters from some of Disney's earliest cartoons. I know what you mean, there would definitely be an assumption that this is just a game for little kids however, Epic Mickey is surprising in its reverence for the early days of Disney animation - stuff that most kids would know nothing about. For instance, Hex, if you saw a Wii Mickey Mouse game on the shelf at a local games shop, would you even look at it twice? Well, reinvigorating the character of Mickey Mouse for Disney is no small undertaking - you'd have to agree that there are definitely a few hurdles to overcome here. There's one rather stand-out reason why Epic Mickey is a game worth serious investigation and that's because this has been the pet project of one Mr Warren Spector, the man behind classics like Deus Ex, System Shock and Ultima Underworld.
